A bunded tank is sometimes also described as a double skinned tank. The inner tank holds the fuel, the outer tank protects the inner tank from U.V. rays and the cold winters. The outer tank area also acts as a catchment area to contain the oil, if ever the inner tank fails.

We carry a large range of heating oil tanks in stock. Delivery and installation can normally be carried out within 5 working days. 

Yes. All plastic tanks are covered by industry wide manufacturers' warranties. The fittings on the tank come with a 1 year warranty. If we have created a supporting base for your new tank this would come with a 5 year warranty. Installation will be carried out with care by our own OFTEC accredited engineers. In the very unlikely event that a problem arises you can telephone us directly for immediate attention including after office hours. 

Bunded tanks are mandatory for all commercial and rental properties when the existing tank is being replaced. If the tank is being replaced in a residential property the tank only has to be bunded if the tank position is within 10mtrs of what is described as controlled water. Interpretation of controlled water is anywhere where leaking oil from a tank could get into the water system, i.e. streams, ditches, dykes, open drains, etc.

Yes, we only use our own staff. Our engineers all wear company uniform and are all trained, professional and very experienced. All of our installation engineers are fully OFTEC accredited and our installation vehicles are all sign written for identification.

Yes. We manufacture our own range of high quality steel oil tanks in a range of standard sizes. If you require something a little different we can also manufacture your replacement tank to your own specifications.

An oil tank should be replaced when it's no longer safe, compliant, or reliable. There's no single lifespan that applies to every tank, but these are good guidelines:

Steel oil tanks: Typically, last 15–20 years, though well-maintained tanks in favourable conditions can sometimes last longer.

Plastic (polyethylene) oil tanks: Often last 15–30 years, depending on quality, exposure to sunlight, and installation conditions.

You should consider replacing the tank if you notice any of the following:

Rust, corrosion, or pitting (on steel tanks), especially around the bottom where water can collect.

Leaks or signs of oil seepage, even if they're small.

Bulging, bowing, or distorted walls (particularly on plastic tanks).

Cracks, splits, or significant weathering of the plastic.

Damaged or deteriorated supports causing the tank to lean or become unstable.

Frequent condensation or water contamination inside the tank, which can accelerate corrosion and affect your heating system.

The tank no longer meets current installation standards or your insurer's requirements.

A typical domestic heating oil tank replacement usually takes 1 day.

Here's what you can generally expect:

Straightforward replacement (same location, similar-sized tank): 4–8 hours.

More complex installation (new base, relocating the tank, or significant pipework changes): 1–2 days.

Very complex projects requiring groundwork or extensive site preparation can take 2–3 days or more.

A typical installation includes:

Pumping any remaining oil from the old tank into the new one (if the oil is clean).

Disconnecting and removing the old tank.

Checking or preparing the tank base.

Positioning and securing the new tank.

Connecting the pipework and filter.

Testing the system for leaks and proper operation.

Disposing of the old tank.

If a new concrete or paving slab base is needed, the installer may need to prepare it in advance or return after it has cured, which can extend the overall project timeline.

Most homeowners experience only a few hours without heating or hot water on the installation day, assuming there are no unexpected issues, and the boiler doesn't require additional work afterward.

In most cases, yes. For a new or replacement domestic heating oil tank in the UK, a bunded tank (a tank with a second outer layer designed to contain leaks) is usually the recommended choice, and in many situations it's required.

A bunded tank is generally required if:

The tank holds more than 2,500 litres.

It's close to a watercourse, drain, borehole, or environmentally sensitive area.

A leak could cause significant environmental damage because of the location.

It's required by local planning or environmental regulations.

Even when it's not legally required, many installers and insurers recommend or prefer bunded tanks because they:

Provide protection if the inner tank leaks.

Tend to have a longer service life than older single-skin tanks.

Single-skin tanks are still permitted in some domestic situations, but if you're replacing an older tank, many homeowners choose a bunded model because the additional cost is relatively small compared with the potential cost of an oil leak.
